My studio and my mind are full of colourful many layered, stitched, manipulated, dyed fabrics inspired by the natural world.
My creative process shifts
Occasionally I have a very clear image in my mind of my final piece and the processes that suit it from the start.
More often, from the moment inspiration compells me to sketch on paper or directly manipulate fabric, more of an ‘organic' evolution kicks in.
I don’t always follow a set path: I draw on my reserves of techniques both learnt and self taught, but embrace surprises and experiments along the way. This allows my art the room to breath and vary from muted naturals to vibrant upcycled shimmer. From realistic or illustrative in style to a celebration of abstract artistic license!
I enjoy the flexibility this gives for the source of the inspiration itself to determine process, materials, techniques and therefore the finished work.
Excitingly, for someone who has always considered themselves a textile artist, but always loved ‘illustrating’ words and ideas, these paintings and drawings I make while researching a subject or exploring inspiration are increasingly becoming finished sold work in their own right.

A sense of place is a reoccurring theme that can be seen clearly in my Stitch Maps (see above and commissions) but infuses all my creativity.
Shoreline and Seas are such an immediate inspiration. However trees, travel, myths, folktales and indigenous textile motifs from around the world have all been highly influential in my artwork over the years. This wonder at the world, its plants, animals and how we interact and share it will never leave me.
